House of the Dragon Season 3 is set to finally pull back the curtain on one of the series’ most mysterious and enigmatic characters: Alys Rivers. Gayle Rankin, who portrays the enigmatic healer and witch of Harrenhal, has confirmed that fans will learn significantly more about Alys’ true identity and origins in the upcoming season.

Quick read:

  • More information about Alys Rivers will be revealed in Season 3
  • Her mention in the books is not much to know about her backstory
  • The show producers will expand this storyline with a fresh plot

Things will be exposed

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Rankin discussed how important it was for her to understand the character’s full background, even when it wasn’t fully shown on screen in Season 2:

“It was so imperative for me to try to make sense, personal sense, of who she is, where she’s come from. And that’s been really exciting to work with Ryan [Condal] and the entire writing team on. And in season 2 it wasn’t exactly explicit, but things will develop, things will be exposed.”

Rankin further explained that while George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood provides very little concrete information about Alys, the show has developed its own rich internal backstory for her. This material helped Rankin ground the character, even if not everything has been revealed to the audience yet.

“Well, there isn’t really backstory in the book about her really. So it was things that we discussed and it was to help me get into character for sure. I need to have something really grounding and clear for myself. So that totally exists. It’s just like for this moment, it’s not totally out in the open.”

One of the show’s biggest mysteries

Alys Rivers was introduced in Season 2 as a mysterious healer at Harrenhal with strange, supernatural abilities. She played a key role in Daemon Targaryen’s haunting visions and experiences at the ruined castle. However, her exact nature: whether she is fully human, a witch, a greenseer, or something far older, has remained deliberately ambiguous.

Her limited presence in the source material made her one of the most debated characters among book readers. Season 3 promises to change that by providing long-awaited answers about who she is and where she comes from.

What might happen in Season 3

With Aemond Targaryen reportedly heading to Harrenhal this season, Alys will have new interactions and conflicts that are likely to shed even more light on her powers and history. Her expanded role suggests she will be far more than just a supporting figure in Daemon’s storyline.
