Filming on HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series Blood Moon continues apace, with the crew hard at work at Titanic Studios in Northern Ireland and, soon enough, in scenic Italy. The show is set thousands of years before the original series, but the more we see of it, the more familiar signs we notice.
For example, just the other day, fansite Watchers on the Wall spotted a certain statue on the Titanic Studios set. Read no further if you don’t want to be exposed to SPOILERS:
Is that a lion’s head statue nested in that cave? Certainly looks like it.
Obviously, lion imagery is associated with Lannisters, who weren’t around during the Age of Heroes when Blood Moon is set. Our best guess is that the lion statue belongs to the Casterly family, who occupied Casterly Rock before Lann the Clever tricked them out of it, but that’s up for debate.
In any case, lions aren’t the only familiar symbol on the Blood Moon set. Watchful Twitter account @BloodmoonIrl snagged a photo of a pile of props, among them another statue:
That is pretty unmistakably a wolf’s head statue. That fits the time period better, as the Lannisters weren’t around during the Age of Heroes but the Starks were. According to legend, House Stark was founded during the Age of Heroes by Brandon the Builder, who raised both Winterfell and the Wall, and maybe Storm’s End and the Hightower as well; guy was busy.
According to HBO, Blood Moon will chronicle “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour,” aka the first time the White Walkers showed up. There were no Targaryens to speak of — in Westeros or anywhere else — during this period of time, but now that we’ve seen statues of lions and wolves, we’ll keep our eyes out for dragons just in case.
