The older version of Bran possessed Jaime Lannister on the day a young Bran caught the knight making sweet, incestuous love to his sister Cersei in a tower at Winterfell. Old man under the tree and Bran are the same person. Old Bran trevelled through time thousands of years backwards and did some shit and couldnt come back (like the old man say – you stay too long in this time, you stay there forever). Shit he done turned out to be pretty shit, so he waited thousands of years for new Bran to be born, then make him come and change the past.
I actually think that we'll learn that Bran is actually Bloodraven .. Bran may actually have been many people in history.. if you think about all of the Bran's and Branden's/Brandon's there have been that were key figures in Westeros history it makes more sense.. plus bloodraven's name is Brynden .. one letter away from Branden .. a lot of those people had powers themselves.. Brandon the builder built the wall that allegedly has magic that prevents the white walkers / the others .. from crossing

By the way the I think the reason that Brans injury lead to the whitewalkings taking over is Because Bran fell out of the tower Jon was sent to the wall early. Then Joffery over heard King Robert say that it would be a mercy to kill bran now, so he hires assassin. This is the driving force that send Cat to Kingslanding and Accelerates the conflict between the Starks and lannisters. So on and so on. Bran falling is a big deal whether it was Brans older self or not is a different things entirely.
Why dont Bran just go gon get his daddys 12 gauge and hunt them walkers like Rick Grimes
