With more and more cast members wrapping up their time on set, the end of filming on the final season of Game of Thrones is in sight. However, there are still miles to go. After all, HBO didn’t built a King’s Landing set the size of a shopping mall to just let it sit there.
That set is what we’re going to talk about today. From the start, we’ve been impressed by the sheer scale of the thing. Now, David Hetherington has kindly let us post a new, highly detailed image he took of the whole shebang. This gives us our best angle yet on this massive undertaking. From left to right, we can see every part of the set worth seeing. At the far end, we’ve got a sizable green screen, which we imagine will be used to fill the frame with falling snow (we’ve seen a layer of fake snow scattered in front of it). Then we have the gate to the city, flanked by two stone towers. The towers are blackened with fire damage; three guess how they get that way.
Moving on, there’s a very long city street with buildings to either side, including a structure modeled after the dome atop St. Blaise’s Church in Dubrovnik, a real-life city that’s stood in for King’s Landing since nearly the beginning of the show. This tells us the crew has probably taken some shots of the Dubrovnik city skyline; they’ll want to match those shots to the ones of this set. We also have a good view of the white guard tower in the middle of the street, which showed up pretty early on. Finally, on the far right end, we have a wall of the Red Keep.
We can’t see exactly what HBO is shooting on that street, but the fact that the crew has built it so big and so detailed indicates that there are huge plans for it. We’re betting on an army breaking through the gate and fighting its way through the streets all the way to the Red Keep. It’s enough to give you the shivers. Or the spins, as it were:
