Few relationships in House of the Dragon became more compelling in season 3 than the bond between Corlys Velaryon and Alyn. After years of distance, father and son finally began moving toward an understanding. But according to Steve Toussaint, that progress could face a serious challenge once Corlys learns about one of Alyn’s most controversial actions: killing the High Septon.

Corlys will struggle with what Alyn did
Speaking to CBR, Toussaint reflected on how Corlys is likely to react when the truth about Alyn’s actions reaches him.
The actor believes Corlys will understand the circumstances surrounding the decision but won’t be happy about it.
“[Corlys will have to] come to terms with the fact that his son almost went all in with Rhaenyra — I don’t know that Alyn had any other choice, to be honest.”
That understanding only goes so far, however.

“But when Corlys finds out that Alyn was the one who struck down the Septon, he’s going to be very sad and disappointed at that.”
It’s a response that feels true to Corlys’ character. Throughout the series, he’s often balanced pragmatism with a strong sense of legacy and responsibility. Even if Alyn’s actions were necessary in the moment, that doesn’t mean Corlys will be comfortable with their consequences.

The real cost may be Alyn’s emotional wellbeing
Interestingly, Toussaint doesn’t believe Corlys’ concern will be focused solely on the death of the High Septon.
Continuing the discussion, the actor explained:
“But like I said, I don’t know what else Alyn could have done, frankly. I just think Corlys will see that as another cost. [First it was] his family, and this time it’s the cost of his son’s emotional wellbeing.”
That observation adds another layer to the tragedy. From Corlys’ perspective, the issue isn’t merely whether Alyn made the correct tactical choice. It’s what that choice may have done to him as a person.
After losing family members and enduring years of war, Corlys understands better than most that victory always comes with a price. According to Toussaint, Alyn’s role in the High Septon’s death may become yet another example of the emotional scars left behind by the Dance of the Dragons.
