In House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 6, Prince Daeron Targaryen faces a sudden and dangerous escalation that forces him to step more fully into his authority.
Actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has now shared insight via Variety, into that moment and what it means for his character’s development.
Reflecting on the assassination attempt against Daeron, Ainsworth highlighted the emotional and political weight of the scene:
“I think shock is a big part of that scene in general. This is an escalation he wouldn’t have ever expected. There’s also this idea of the power dynamics between him and Ormund leveling out and clashing in a way.”
The fact Ormund didn’t see this as an obvious trap and started throwing up after Daeron and Gwayne saved them clearly shows that he’s never experienced any sort of real combat and just plays the role of the strong knight. A clash of authority
One of the most significant aspects of the sequence, according to Ainsworth, is the shifting relationship between Daeron and Lord Ormund Hightower. Until this point, Ormund has largely held the upper hand, with men like “bold” Jon Roxton following his orders without question. The assassination attempt changes that balance.
“‘Bold’ Jon Roxton there has very much been a man who’s followed Ormund’s orders, and it’s the first time I’m trying to stop him, and Ormund’s ordering him to do something. So there’s something about that which is stepping up this dynamic within this group amidst the chaos of everything.”
For the first time, Daeron actively challenges Ormund’s command in a moment of crisis. This confrontation marks a clear turning point: the young prince is no longer simply under the protection or direction of the older lord. He is beginning to assert himself as a figure with his own voice and authority.
Shock and escalation
Ainsworth emphasized that the attempt on Daeron’s life comes as a genuine shock to the character. Daeron has not been prepared for this level of direct threat, and the sudden violence forces him to confront the realities of the war and his place within it. The chaos of the moment becomes the backdrop for a deeper transformation, one in which the prince starts to claim power rather than simply inherit or receive it.
The scene serves as an important beat in Daeron’s Season 3 arc. What begins as a moment of unexpected danger becomes an opportunity for the character to step forward.
By intervening and opposing Ormund’s orders even though his uncle Gwayne was the primary defender, Daeron signals that the power dynamics within the group are evolving. The once more passive or protected prince is beginning to act with greater agency.
