Dexter Sol Ansell may play Prince Aegon Targaryen in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but this week, he brought Westeros straight into his classroom. The young actor attended World Book Day at his school dressed as Egg, the character he portrays in the George R.R. Martin adaptation. Fans of the series quickly picked up on the moment and loved the idea that the breakout star of the show decided to celebrate the event by embodying the same role that made him famous.

The timing could not have been better. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has become a welcome addition to the Game of Thrones universe, especially after years of debate surrounding the franchise. Following the divisive ending of Game of Thrones and the darker tone of House of the Dragon, the new series arrived with a lighter and more character-focused story. At the center of that story is the bond between Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, and Egg, played by Ansell.

  • Their Dunk and Egg friendship is the emotional core of the HBO series.

Dexter Sol Ansell on playing Egg and balancing Prince and Commoner

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Egg is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen, yet he spends most of the story pretending to be a common boy while serving as Dunk’s squire. That double identity created an unusual acting challenge for Ansell. During his chat with Vulture, he said:

The outfit definitely makes me feel more royal, but I tried to play it pretty much the same. It’s very hard because I have to be a smallfolk boy and then I also have to have that element of being a prince.

Ansell explained that sometimes Egg’s royal background slips out unintentionally during conversations with Dunk.

Now and then, I do a bit of princely things… I have those moments where I go, Oh, bit too far there.

Despite being born into one of Westeros’ most feared families, Egg’s real motivation is surprisingly simple.

He wants to be big, but he really wants to have someone who loves him. So he will do whatever he can to have a really good friend or a really good relationship with someone like Dunk.

The actor also believes Egg’s kindness comes from the cruelty he experienced growing up among the Targaryens.

Because so many people were mean to him. Aerion was absolutely vile to him… He knows how that feels, and he wouldn’t want anyone else to feel that way.

Still, even Egg is not immune to the darker impulses of his bloodline. He added, “In front of Aerion, yes. He just wants to kill him.”

Interestingly, Dexter Sol Ansell entered the role without deep knowledge of the larger Game of Thrones universe. Because he is only eleven years old, he has not watched the earlier shows.

All I really know is that there’s a load of dragons, and they all want to be the king or the queen or whatever.

He even joked about Egg’s family connection to Daenerys Targaryen.

And apparently I have a really good granddaughter.

When discussing Egg’s decision to run away and travel with Dunk, Ansell suggested that fear and uncertainty may have pushed the character toward freedom.

Maybe it was because people are dying… Egg’s thinking, I’m coming up.

Fans hoping for more action in the next chapter may be pleased with what Ansell hinted.

All I can say is that Egg definitely has more action.

At the same time, the actor acknowledged that the long-term fate of Egg remains uncertain, even among fans who know the lore.

Everyone has their conspiracies about what they think is going to happen.

Off camera, Ansell’s shaved head for the role even became a small business opportunity at school.

Well, it’s exciting… If anyone wants to feel my head… if you buy me a drink, you get to touch my hair.

And when asked if he learned any new swear words while filming, Ansell kept things simple, “No.”
Ansell showing up at school dressed as Egg is a charming reminder of what makes A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms work. The series focuses on friendship, loyalty, and small adventures rather than massive wars. Ansell’s performance captures that tone perfectly, and it is easy to see why fans quickly connected with his version of Egg. If HBO moves forward with Season 2 as expected, Egg’s journey will likely become more complicated.
