A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 finale left fans hanging with a big twist involving Maekar Targaryen and Egg. In the post-credits scene, as the Targaryens are leaving Ashford, Maekar realises that Egg is not there and begins to look for him to no avail. It confirms that Egg lied to Dunk about having his father’s permission to squire for him on the road. In an interview with IGN, showrunner Ira Parker confirmed that they will address the twist.
Quick read:

  • Season 2 might answer the question that everyone has after that comedic finale twist.
  • Showrunner Ira Parker wants to inject a touch of “dark humor” into the scene.
  • He never intended the scene to be as serious as it has turned out.

The hilarious scene where Maekar is looking for Egg in frustration is not in The Hedge Knight, the George R.R. Martin novella on which the series is based. It was one of those minor yet significant changes that the creators made to the show adaptation.
In his conversation with IGN, Parker revealed that they will elaborate on that scene in the next season. He said, “We’ve actually gone through a lot of iterations on how to deal with that. And so far we’ve landed on my favorite one, which is being addressed with hopefully a light touch and also a little bit of a dark humor as well.”
Humor, dark or not, has been one of the most important themes throughout this new prequel series. However, considering Maekar Targaryen actor Sam Spruell has already confirmed that he won’t be returning in the next season, it is worth wondering how they plan to address it.

Ira Parker wrote the finale twist to be “tongue-in-cheek”

Ira Parker has consistently stated that staying true to the source material and having George R.R. Martin’s approval are his biggest priorities. So, every pivot and addition is intentional. Regarding the post-credits scene, he told the outlet that he wrote it as a playful scene “only for half of the people at HBO to take it quite seriously and probably half of my writing room, too.”
Parker added, “It was just like, ‘No, what do you mean? We’ve got to answer it now.’” So, it will indeed be addressed, though fans will have to wait until the next season to find out the answer.
