Emilia Clarke has spoken out on the cancellation of the Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts, saying that she hopes the series can get ‘reincarnated’.

It was announced yesterday that the project had been axed by HBO after bosses were unhappy with a pilot for the fledgling series, set thousands of years before the events in George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.

Now, Daenerys Targaryen herself has weighed in on the controversy, saying that ‘it’s difficult to get stuff made’.

Bloodmoon would have been set thousands of years before Game of Thrones and would have featured the origins of the White Walkers (Picture: HBO)

‘Maybe it’ll be reincarnated at some point,’ the actress told Entertainment Tonight.

‘But if it wasn’t meant to happen now, then I’m sure it’s because [HBO] know that it wasn’t going to be as perfect as it should have been.’

Rumoured to have been called Bloodmoon, the prequel would have also starred Blackadder’s Miranda Richardson alongside Watts and was to be written by Kingsman scribe Jane Goldman.

It’s also interesting to note that Thrones itself had a similarly troubled production process. Clarke replaced original actress Tamzin Merchant in the role of Daenerys after HBO allowed showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss to re-shoot and re-cast their disastrous first pilot.

However, it seems that for now at least, Bloodmoon will not be granted a similar fate and is dead in the water. Westeros fans shouldn’t worry, however, as another prequel – this time focusing on House Targaryen – was commissioned for a full series just hours after the Watts-starring show was axed.

House of the Dragon will adapt author Martin’s quasi-historical fiction Fire and Blood, which tracks the Targaryen’s arrival in Westeros, the establishment of their royal dynasty and the massive battle caused by an inter-family civil war known as The Dance of the Dragons.

The news of Bloodmoon’s axing also comes just a day after former Game of Thrones bosses Benioff and Weiss dropped out of writing a new trilogy of Star Wars films.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to stream on NOW TV.
