Emilia Clarke, the actress who famously portrayed Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, has admitted that she has not watched the prequel series House of the Dragon. In a recent appearance on Elizabeth Day’s podcast, when asked if she has seen the show, Clarke gave a straightforward answer: “No.”
Quick read:
- Clarke says she hasn’t watched HOTD
- She might never watch it
- She feels like it’s similar to attending somebody else’s high school reunion
She went on to explain her reasoning with a relatable and humorous analogy:
“It’s like going to someone else’s high school reunion. You’re like, ‘Oh, that’s nice… but I wasn’t there.’”

Clarke’s comment highlights the emotional distance many original Game of Thrones cast members feel toward the expanding franchise. While she is incredibly proud of her time as the Mother of Dragons, she views House of the Dragon as a separate chapter that doesn’t directly involve her character’s story.
A respectful distance
This isn’t the first time Clarke has spoken about stepping back from the Game of Thrones universe. After the intense eight-year journey and the emotional whirlwind of the final season, many cast members, including Clarke, have expressed the need to create some separation from the show that defined their careers.
Despite not watching the series, Clarke has been supportive of the new cast and the continuation of the Targaryen saga. She has previously praised the performances of Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra) and Matt Smith (Daemon), showing respect for the new generation of actors bringing the world to life.
