The quote that hit hard
Following the shocking events of House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1, where Jace meets his tragic end during the Battle of the Gullet, Emma D’Arcy described the loss with raw emotional weight:
“I think Jace’s death is honestly a sort of unquantifiable loss. There was a shared understanding between them, a kind of intimacy that I don’t think was replicated anywhere else.”
This deeply personal bond between Rhaenyra and her eldest son; one built on mutual respect, quiet understanding, and shared burdens of leadership made his death uniquely painful, according to the actor.

“Was Rhaenyra a role model to Jace?”

A relationship unlike any other
D’Arcy emphasized that the connection between Rhaenyra and Jace stood apart from her other relationships in the series. While Rhaenyra has complex dynamics with Daemon, Alicent, and her other children, the “shared understanding” with Jace represented something rarer: a true partnership and emotional anchor.
Harry Collett’s portrayal of Jace as a dutiful, maturing heir who often served as Rhaenyra’s voice of reason made their mother-son scenes some of the most heartfelt in the show.

How Jace’s death changes Rhaenyra
Emma D’Arcy also revealed how this loss propels Rhaenyra forward.
“Grief simplifies things, and I think there is a kind of nihilism offered to Rhaenyra in this moment that allows her to be more brutal. There’s a black-and-white thinking sometimes that comes with grief.”
The “vengeance” Rhaenyra now demands is expected to bring out a darker, more ruthless side of the Black Queen; one that may require Daemon’s particular brand of violence.
Fans are calling Jace’s death one of the most emotionally brutal moments of the series so far, with many praising both Harry Collett’s performance and Emma D’Arcy’s thoughtful reflections on the aftermath. Jace’s death marks a major turning point early in Season 3, stripping Rhaenyra of her heir and closest confidant.
As Emma D’Arcy so eloquently put it, this is a loss that cannot be measured and its ripples will be felt throughout the rest of the Dance of the Dragons.
