Emma D’Arcy’s hilarious injury story
Emma D’Arcy kicked things off with a funny and relatable story about starting production while recovering from a major injury:
“If I’m totally honest, it was a funny time because I had my ACL reconstructed just before we started shooting. And so, I was hopping about on crutches for the first three months in all my frocks.”

Filming intense scenes as Rhaenyra Targaryen while navigating the set on crutches in full queenly costumes is a memory Emma clearly looks back on with amusement. It highlights the physical demands actors face even before the cameras start rolling.

Matt Smith on the power of small moments
Matt Smith took a more reflective approach, emphasizing that the best memories often come from the quiet, everyday moments on a long and difficult shoot:
“Some of the nicest moments are often the ones that sound pretty boring. But there’s also the most tiniest moments like, when you’re wearing makeup and you give each other a nod, you know, ‘yes mate you’re going through it as well’ and then there’s this sense of mutual camaraderie when you acknowledge that it is a tough show to make. It’s a long old slog, and knowing people are going through it at the same time, there’s real camaraderie throughout production.”
Matt’s answer beautifully captures the reality of working on a massive, high-pressure show like House of the Dragon, where long hours, intense schedules, and physical demands are shared by the entire cast and crew.
A bond built on shared struggle
Both actors’ stories reflect the strong bond between the cast, especially between Emma and Matt, who play the central couple Rhaenyra and Daemon. Their real-life friendship and mutual support clearly help them power through the demanding production. These candid insights show that while House of the Dragon Season 3 looks epic on screen, the journey to create it was filled with both laughter and quiet solidarity.
