House of the Dragon, the precursor to Game of Thrones, has so far successfully captured the attention of fans. Fire and Blood author George R. R. Martin developed a wide cast of fascinating characters, many of whom had “a shade of grey”. After a one-night stand with Rhaenyra, Fabien Frankel‘s Criston Cole, once a magnificent knight, turned into a rejected lover. And he will surprise fans in Season 2, according to Frankel.

Fabien Frankel teases House of the Dragon Season 2

Criston Cole will be a key character in the Dance of the Dragons going forward, and we will see him on the frontlines a lot more. Frankel, who recently appeared on the cover of Man About Town‘s Spring/Summer 2024 issue, said this of Season 2:

“It’s a really different season. I think the audience will be very surprised. I don’t think whatever you’re expecting to happen is what will and that definitely applies to Criston.”

He further added that he would also touch on his character’s apparent “ineptitude for heartbreak”.

Criston Cole is not a good person

Earlier in an interview, Frankel reflected on Criston Cole’s character:

“I don’t think there’s anything premeditated about him, at least in the beginning of the show. He’s very much set up as one thing, and as the show goes on, changes a great deal. That was what was exciting to me. He’s very much set up as a noble, well-meaning knight there to protect Rhaenyra. And for those who’ve read the book, he isn’t that by any means.”
