The second episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms aired on Sunday, introducing viewers to several key members of House Targaryen, including Prince Baelor Targaryen, Aerion Targaryen, Valarr Targaryen, and Maekar Targaryen, portrayed by Sam Spruell.
Among them, Maekar Targaryen stands out as a character destined to play a significant role as the series progresses – something book readers are well aware of. While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms operates on a smaller, more intimate scale compared to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, the adaptation continues George R.R. Martin’s long-standing demand for faithfulness to his source material.
Sam Spruell: A perfect fit for Maekar Targaryen?
Sam Spruell steps into the role of Maekar Targaryen, a character sharply contrasted with his elder brother, Prince Baelor Targaryen. Where Baelor is warm and charismatic, Maekar is known for his severity and rigid demeanour. Casting such a layered figure was no small challenge.
For Spruell, understanding Maekar’s internal conflicts was essential. In an interview with Marco Spagnoli, the actor spoke about his first impressions after reading the script. He also talked about discovering the complexity of the character. He said:
“I read the scripts. I thought they were great, and I saw my character and I thought he was interesting. There’s lots to him – failed father… kind of second in line to his brother. There are all kinds of micro tensions there that I could exploit. And so I was just excited to do it.”
Spruell’s remarks highlight the quiet contradictions that define Maekar – resentment, duty, and unfulfilled ambition all simmering beneath the surface.
Maekar Targaryen in the books
In George R.R. Martin’s writings, Maekar Targaryen first appears in The Tales of Dunk and Egg, with his backstory expanded further in Fire & Blood. He was one of the sons of King Daeron Targaryen. He developed a reputation early in life for his temper and harsh disposition. Despite this, Maekar was a capable military commander and was once described as “all that could be wished in a knight.”
As a father, Maekar Targaryen was strict and often unyielding toward his sons – Daeron the Drunken, Aerion Brightflame, Aemon, and Aegon. His relationships with them were complicated, marked by disappointment and conflict, particularly in the case of Aerion’s cruel and erratic behaviour.
