A heartbreaking moment between young Egg and his father, Maekar Targaryen, has fans in tears after the information about it being deleted from the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 finale has surfaced online. As revealed by Sam Spruell (Maekar) in an HBO promotional sit-down interview, the clip consisted of scenes from the funeral of Prince Baelor.

According to Sam Spruell, this moment was shot when Egg is standing at Prince Baelor’s funeral beside his father, Maekar. In a small moment of vulnerability, Egg slowly reaches out to hold Maekar’s hand seeking comfort, only for Maekar to instantly and coldly slap his son’s hand away without even looking at him. However, this scene was not shown in the series, the reason for which has not been clarified by the creators.

Why this scene hits so hard

The above-mentioned moment adds painful layers to Egg’s relationship with his father. After losing his beloved uncle Baelor, Egg instinctively turns to his father in grief, only to be rejected. Fans immediately connected it to later scenes, noting how it makes Maekar’s cold comfort in Aerion’s room feel even more crushing.

Many are now arguing it should have stayed in the finale because it deepens Maekar’s complex character and makes Egg’s later choices even more poignant. Since the clip dropped, reactions have flooded X (Twitter):

While the final episode still delivered an emotional punch, this cut moment would have made Baelor’s funeral feel even more intimate and tragic. It reinforces why Egg grows into the compassionate king he eventually becomes. With season 2 already filming, fans are hopeful that similar emotional depth will make it to screen. They are also hopeful that HBO will release some of these moments as raw footages now that season 1 has ended.
