George R. R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight, getting a faithful adaptation in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, has been every bit as rewarding for fans as it has been for Martin himself. Besides Dunk and Egg, the prequel series has introduced several other captivating characters, including Daniel Ings’ Lyonel Baratheon. The Laughing Storm’s role is much more fleshed out in the show than it was in the novella. While fans are yet to find out if he will make an appearance in season 2, Ings recently revealed that Martin told him Lyonel will “come back later.”

Quick read:

  • George R.R. Martin spoke to Daniel Ings about Lyonel Baratheon’s future.
  • Ings would be more than happy to reprise his role as the Laughing Storm.
  • He refused to comment on season 2, but hopes for Lyonel’s return.

Martin’s novella series, Tales of Dunk and Egg, follows the unlikely duo on different adventures. The series adaptation will follow that exact format, which implies that some characters will be left behind. Reflecting on whether Lyonel will have the same fate in a new interview with Collider, Daniel Ings said, “I spoke to George one day on set. He came down and was like, [George R.R. Martin voice] ‘You know, your character comes back later on down the line.’”

Ings mentioned that he dived deep into the Westeros lore online. He noted that a lot of “these books haven’t necessarily been written yet, but, yeah, there’s some interesting story to tell further down the line with Lyonel and Dunk and Egg.” He concluded that if those stories ever get told, he would be “pumped.”

Despite being a fan-favourite character, Lyonel is also unlikely to appear anytime soon in the Games of Thrones spinoff. When asked if his character will be in season 2, Ings said, “I mean, I couldn’t possibly comment on Series 2, but I would love for audiences to get to see Lyonel Baratheon again. I’d love to play this guy again. He’s not in the second book or the third book.” A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, based on The Sworn Sword, has already entered post-production and will likely be released soon.
