Game of Thrones and Misfits star Iwan Rheon and Downton Abbey‘s Tom Cullen have teamed up for new horror movie Barbarians, which has secured an April release in North America.

Studio IFC Midnight has confirmed that it has acquired North American rights to the movie, which marks the directorial debut of The Lost Daughter producer Charles Dorfman, who has also written the film’s script.

Barbarians is set over the course of 24 hours and sees couple Adam (Rheon) and Eva (Maria Full of Grace star Catalina Sandino Moreno) wake up in what appears to be their dream new house on Adam’s birthday.

Later on, property developer and friend of the couple Lucas (Cullen) shows up with his girlfriend Chloe (Section Zéro‘s Inès Spiridonov) to enjoy a birthday dinner for Adam and to celebrate his and Eva’s purchase of the house.

But, over dinner, secrets begin to unravel – and when the doorbell rings again, the evening takes a very nightmarish turn. As manners give way to madness, the apparently idyllic evening of celebration descends into a dark night of terror.

It soon turns out that the civilised dinner party will be anything but…

Barbarians also stars Sex Education actor Connor Swindells, Prime Suspect 1973‘s Tommy McDonnell and Reign star Will Kemp, and we have been given a first-look at the movie in the form of an image of Rheon’s Adam looking a little apprehensive.

President of IFC Films, Arianna Bocco, said: “Barbarians is a brilliant character study with havoc-wreaking performances and an innovative take on the home-invasion thriller that continually serves to surprise.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Charles Dorfman on his directorial debut and his sharply written script that will remind audiences of the barbaric spirit within us all.”

The movie, which originally premiered at Fantastic Fest 2021 in Texas, will be released in cinemas and on demand on April 1 in North America. A UK release has not yet been confirmed.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
