A first look at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in HBO’s upcoming TV series The Last Of Us has been released, as the Game of Thrones stars embark on a treacherous journey together.
The Last Of Us, which is based on the video game of the same name, stars Pedro, 46, as Joel and Bella, 18, as Ellie, two people who have survived in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by an infection.
Joel, who has suffered a traumatic past, takes on the task of smuggling Ellie out of a quarantine zone across the US, with the young girl possibly being the key to a vaccine being created.
Earlier this year, fans of the hit video game – which first launched in 2013 – were ecstatic to learn of the actors taking on the lead roles in the TV adaptation, which also stars Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother, and Nico Parker as Sarah, Joel’s daughter.
On Sunday September 26 to mark The Last Of Us Day, HBO and Naughty Dog released a first look at Pedro and Bella in action, their backs to the camera as they take in the view of a plane wreckage.
In the photo, Bella is wearing a red hoodie and carrying a rucksack, while Pedro is wearing a denim shirt while carrying a rucksack and Joel’s signature brown jacket.
Neil Druckmann, the writer of The Last Of Us video game currently developing the TV show, expressed his excitement over the first look image in a tweet, recalling how he reacted when he saw the two protagonists in costume for the very first time.
‘When I first saw them on set in full costume, I was like: “Hooooooly s**t! It’s Joel & Ellie!”’ he said.
‘The @HBO adaptation of @Naughty_Dog’s The Last of Us is full steam ahead!
‘Can’t wait to show you more (from all of our projects!) Happy #TLoUDay!!!’
Craig Mazin, writer and producer of The Last Of Us, said that their journey to creating the TV adaptation has been ‘amazing so far’.
Referencing a quote from the video game, Pedro tweeted: ‘I got you, baby girl,’ alongside the same picture, adding the hashtag: ‘#HappyBirthdayJoel.’
Bella, who recently starred in His Dark Materials, added in a separate tweet: ‘Day and night, all we do is survive. The @HBO adaptation of #TheLastofUs is in production.’
Every year, The Last Of Us fans mark September 26 as ‘The Last Of Us Day’, to commemorate the day in 2013 on which the brain infection in the video game reached critical mass.
Not only is the date known as Outbreak Day, but it’s also the day of Joel’s birthday.
Pedro and Bella previously starred in Game of Thrones, both playing fan-favourite characters.
Pedro played Oberyn Martell, also known as the Red Viper of Dorne, while Bella played Lyanna Mormont, the young and fearsome head of House Mormont.
The Last Of Us is currently in production and will air on HBO.
