In the last few months, there’ve been countless twists and turns surrounding the end of The Crown. The latest has something to do with Prince Philip…

The last seasons of The Crown

The suspense surrounding the last seasons of The Crown has been at an all-time high for months now: we recently learned that the last part of Queen Elizabeth II’s life will be played by Imelda Staunton, aka Harry Potter’s repulsive Dolores Umbridge.

But that’s not all! The latest twist to date was also major. In fact, in early July, we found out that screenwriter Peter Morgan had changed his mind about ending of the series, and was backpedalling on his decision to stop at season 5. So, much to the delight of fans of the show, there will be a 6th season.

More good news: while they’re still not quite done with casting actors for seasons 5 and 6, the Coronavirus epidemic hasn’t caused any delays in the production schedule, shooting has not been suspended, and season 4 will be available in the fall.

However, we’re still missing a crucial piece of information: who’ll be playing alongside Imelda Staunton in the final seasons?

Who will play Prince Philip?

Given the number of high-profile actors they’ve cast throughout the series, it’s safe to assume a big name will be taking on the role. According to Deadline magazine, actor Jonathan Pryce will be playing Prince Philip.

The 73-year-old actor needs no introduction: after starring in blockbuster films like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl and 007: Tomorrow Never Dies, he joined the cast of smash series Game of Thrones to play the High Sparrow in seasons 5 and 6.

He’s replacing another Game of Thrones actor, Tobias Menzies, who has played a younger version of the character since season 3 and played Edmure Tully in GoT!

A nominee for awards at the 2020 BAFA, Golden Globes, and Oscars for his performance alongside Anthony Hopkins in Netflix film The Two Popes, Jonathan Pryce will soon be hitting the small screen as Prince Philip circa 1990-2000.
