The San Diego Comic-Con, arguably the biggest annual celebration of pop culture on the planet, kicks off at the San Diego Convention Center on Thursday, July 19. Game of Thrones has been a consistent presence at the show, with select cast and crew members routinely showing up to give their thoughts and feelings on the most recent season of the show…and what’s to come.

But not this year. Cue the HBO press release:

Due to production schedules and air dates for Game of Thrones and Westworld, these series will not be presented at San Diego Comic-Con this summer.  HBO has a longstanding relationship with SDCC, and we are very grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic response over the years. We look forward to returning in the future.

So that’s a shame. Neither Game of Thrones nor Westworld, HBO’s two biggest shows (and undoubtedly the ones that appeal most to Comic-Con attendees), will make an appearance at this year’s convention. This is the first time Game of Thrones has missed the event, but then again, the show usually doesn’t film this late in the year. Will it still be shooting in July? That’s past the point when we’d heard they will have wrapped.

Let’s put on our conspiracy theory hats for a minute. Maybe HBO isn’t sending anyone to the con because they’ll be too busy filming. OR, maybe they’re not making an appearance because it’s the year before the final season and they don’t want to run the risk of anything leaking. After all, we know that some cast members are done filming; hell, plenty have already appeared at cons, so HBO could dispatch people if it really wanted to.

Interesting that Westworld isn’t appearing, either. The second season of that show is running right now, and while it’s been renewed for a third, I wouldn’t think that filming had begun yet.

Curious, says I. What do you guys make of it?
