Fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin has hinted that the novels on which Game of Thrones is based will end differently to the show.
Speaking to Welt, the 71-year-old author suggested that his book series A Song of Ice and Fire will not meet the same conclusion as the HBO drama.
Martin said: “People know an ending — but not the ending.”
The show came to a controversial end last year as season 8 saw some divisive character arcs and shocking deaths that left some fans complaining and asking for a do-over.
For George, however, the story of Westeros continues as he aims to get the sixth instalment of the book series, The Winds of Winter, published.
After this, he aims to publish a seventh and final novel in the series, A Dream of Spring.
“I still continue what I’ve been doing for years: I still try to finish first the next book Winds Of Winter and then the follow-up novel A Dream Of Spring,” noted Martin. “These are the things that I focus on. Then we’ll see further.”
HBO aren’t done with the fantasy world of Westeros either, as a new spin-off series entitled House of the Dragon will be set over three centuries before the main series and focus on the Targaryen Dynasty

The show will be based on Martin’s history of Westeros, entitled Fire and Blood.
“It’s my pleasure to announce today that we are ordering House of the Dragon straight to series for HBO,” said Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, at a launch event in Los Angeles for the HBO Max streaming platform last year.
“It tells the story of House Targaryen and the early days of Westeros.”
We can’t wait!
