Game Of Thrones is moving from Westeros to the West End in a new play written by George RR Martin, new reports claim.
The legendary author, who created the world of the Seven Kingdoms, will be adding to the increasing Westeros franchise which already includes the upcoming House Of The Dragon, and at least five other TV projects.
First revealed by Hollywood Reporter, the play is believed to cover The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, a contest which occurred just 16 years before the events of the Game of Thrones series.
Held over 10 days, The Great Tourney was considered the biggest competition in Westeros history – with jousting and archery bouts creating essentially their version of the Olympics.
Among those in attendance were Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark, Prince Oberyn, Jaime and Cersei Lannister.
Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, the secret parents of Jon Snow, were also both there.
It’s at this event that Rhaegar declares his love for Lyanna, leading to the eventual war between the Targaryens and Baratheons, as at the time, Lyanna was betrothed to Robert.
The play’s description, according to Hollywood Reporter states: ‘The play will for the first time take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event that previously was shrouded in mystery.
‘Featuring many of the most iconic and well-known characters from the series, the production will boast a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing in prophecy, in the process revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now.’
Once the play is completed, it will be released on New York’s Broadway, London’s West End, as well as a location in Australia.
It’s expected to arrive in 2023.
