Game of Thrones star Ian Beattie has revealed that he desperately tried to avoid spoilers while working on the set of the HBO show and when his plan failed miserably, he was pretty annoyed.

Yep, the internet is bad enough with online leaks, so working on the show and trying to keep away from spoilers was always going to be near-impossible.

The actor, who played Ser Meryn Trant until his death in season five, revealed that one of his co-stars let slip a huge storyline despite having made requests to be kept in the dark about how the episodes would play out.

Speaking at MCM Comic Con Birmingham over the weekend, Ian confessed: ‘The more I fell in love with the show, the less I wanted to read the scripts.

‘At the start of season three, I actually phoned the production office and said, “Don’t send me the scripts. Just send me my scenes.”‘

He continued: ‘All the way through season 4, I told everybody, “Don’t tell me. Don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.”‘

However, Ian revealed that he almost finished the series without hearing any major spoilers, until the final day on set that is.

‘The last day of filming in Belfast, the season’s wrapping up, and I’m doing a scene with Nikolai [Coster-Waldau] and Jack [Gleeson], where Joffrey is slagging off his uncle,’ Ian said.

‘So we finish that scene, I’m standing outside having a cigarette, and Charles Dance walks up and he’s in a dressing gown. “Well…” he says, “the little bastard finally killed me.”‘

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 14 and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK. In the meantime, you can currently stream seasons one to seven on NOW TV.
