Footage from behind-the-scenes of Game Of Thrones might go some way to explaining the now infamous coffee cup scene on season eight.
A scene in episode four of the final season, The Last Of The Starks, contained a major fail when viewers spotted a modern takeaway coffee cup on the table in front of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).
The show is yet to comment on what happened, but a BTS clip from season four offers what could be an explanation for how someone’s flat white ended up in the shot.
A featurette around the episode The Lion And The Rose looks at what went into pulling off Joffrey Baratheon’s (Jack Gleeson) wedding to Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer).
In the video some of the cast members, including Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister), stand together on set, presumably waiting for direction. In Coster-Waldau’s right hand a takeaway coffee cup is visible.
Some fans on Twitter have mistaken this for a scene from the show, and while it is an off-camera moment (Coster-Waldau is not wearing Jaime’s false hand), it shows that it’s not that difficult to accidentally leave a coffee cup lying around on set if people are sipping away between takes.
It’s just unfortunate that in this instance it made it into the final cut that was aired to millions of fans. Whoops!
The gaffe is made all the more hilarious when it came to light that creators Weiss and David Benioff made a cameo in the very same scene and failed to spot the thing that didn’t belong.
However they were probably just too excited to be making a cameo to take notice to what else was going on.
When the remaining characters weren’t sitting around drinking coffee of course, there was the small matter of trying to defeat Cersei this week, but the latest clash came at a cost. We won’t spoil that for you here…
Game Of Thrones airs Mondays at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Seasons one to seven are available on NOW TV.
