Game of Thrones creator addresses potential Star Wars return

Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and DB Weiss were supposed to go from Westeros to a galaxy far, far away, as they were linked to a Star Wars project for Disney a few years back.

But then, it was announced they were departing the science fiction franchise, as well as their controversial HBO series Confederate, and have remained relatively quiet until they came back with Netflix series Metal Lords, which premieres on April 8.

Speaking to ComicBook.com about whether they would ever return to Star Wars, Weiss said that it is unlikely at the time.

“Right at the moment, I’m so excited about Metal Lords coming out, and there’s also The Three-Body Problem that we’re working on and, between those two things, that accounts for about 150% of my attention span,” he said.

It is unknown how much work the pair did with Disney on Star Wars – it could be something as simple as just throwing around ideas (a Jedi origin trilogy was rumoured). It’s entirely possible that anything they did come up with has or will be retooled into something else, like how the Josh Trank-directed Boba Fett film eventually morphed into The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

The first Star Wars Disney+ series is also going to be spinning off further, with a show based on the character Ahsoka Tano, while an Obi-Wan Kenobi series is due to premiere in May on the House of Mouse’s streaming service.

Meanwhile, after lots of planning, development and a few cancellations, Game of Thrones‘ first spin-off show House of the Dragon – set 200 years before the main show – is making its way to our screens, with the premiere date revealed earlier today.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
