Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden descent to ‘madness’ was one of the sorest points for Game of Thrones fans. It appeared the once favourite heroine of HBO series took a dark turn with little rhyme or reason which played a huge part in the subsequent backlash that tarnished the fantasy epic’s legacy for good.
In the penultimate episode, titled The Bells, Dany (played by Emilia Clarke) charged into Kings Landing on her final dragon standing, torched the entire town down and murdered thousands of innocents to kill Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and claim the Iron Throne.
However, those with a careful eye may have found some clues in her mighty fur coat which pointed towards the Mother of Dragons’ cataclysmic fall from grace and why she believed that ultimately she was the ‘saviour’ of Westeros.
‘Initially it was about the idea that if she’s riding a dragon to the North, she should be warm. And then I decided that actually it’s the first time she’s performed a completely selfless task — because it’s usually for her own gain — and on this occasion, it was actually for her love,’ costume designer Michele Clapton told TV Guide.
‘So, I loved this idea, as I developed this costume, that it’s almost [as if] she sees herself as this saviour, this angel. And so when she arrives and descends on this dragon, she is this sort of angel of mercy,’ she went on.
‘I think it just said so much about her mental state at the time, how she saw herself.’
Clapton’s comments come after a deleted scene from season eight revealed Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was aware of his lover and auntie’s intentions and her descent didn’t come as a huge surprise to the reluctant but rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
In the recently released Game of Thrones box set, Emilia Clarke reveals in added bonus documentary When Winter Falls the moment which triggered Daenerys’ downfall.
Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
