Game Of Thrones’ Kit Harington makes no secret of the fact he was really annoyed that Jon Snow wasn’t the one to kill off the Night King in the Battle of Winterfell.
The iconic episode of the final season saw our favourite characters club together to defeat the Night King and the Walkers as they fought at the grounds of Winterfell.
Eventually, it was Arya (Maisie Williams) that killed off the mystical icy king, leaping through the air to deliver the final blow that ended the mystical character’s reign of terror on Westeros.
But speaking in behind-the-scenes documentary When Winter Falls, which comes as part of the complete collection now available on DVD, Kit admitted that despite all of Jon’s heroic moments, that was the one he wanted.
‘I was p***ed that it wasn’ t me killing the Night King!,’ he declared. ‘I would’ve given you…I would’ve bet you thousands!’
Maisie, on the other hand, was more than pleased with beating her on-screen brother to the (literal) punch, and said: ‘I’m really proud of myself! I’m proud of everyone. I’m proud of the work that was put in.’
She then cheekily added with a grin: ‘…and I was grateful that it was me and not Kit.’
David Benioff, showrunner of the series alongside DB Weiss, admitted that he had known for years that it would be Arya that would come in to save the day, with everything she went through building until that moment.
‘I think it’s been three years now that we’ve known that it would be Arya that delivered that fatal blow,’ he told the cameras. ‘At the exact spot where the Children of the Forest took the dragon glass blade to create the Night King, and he’s uncreated by the Valyrian Steel.’
The Night King’s death saw hundreds of reanimated soldiers die simultaneously as a result of the slaying, which saved Arya and Jon’s brother Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) from death by mere seconds.
‘He’s the king on the chess board and when the king is toppled, the game is over, it doesn’t matter how many piece you have left,’ he explained.
The 90-minute long epic episode brought some of the most game-changing moments of the series, with the documentary tracking the painstaking 55 night long shoot to get everything they needed.
Speaking with some of the show’s major players, the documentary tracks the work that went into the biggest moments of the Winterfell battle.
It also includes some unexpected consequences that marked the rest of the series – such as Daenerys Targaryen triggering a blood lust during her quest for power that had disastrous effects on King’s Landing.
