Should Oberyn Martell have died in Game Of Thrones? (Picture: HBO)

An interesting Game Of Thrones fan theory claims Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) shouldn’t have died in combat against The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson).

We wish Oberyn hadn’t bitten the dust in season four too, so this theory definitely helps a bit.

Fans were gutted to see the dashing and heroic character get his head squished by The Mountain in that iconic death scene, but according to one viewer it technically shouldn’t have happened.

Reddit user AnemicRoyalty10 shared a lengthy post explaining that realistically The Mountain should have died after he was stabbed with Oberyn’s poisoned spear as ‘once the spear was pulled, blood would have gushed out of him, and his circulatory system would have shut down’.

They went on: ‘Given this it seems rather preposterous that he would be able to lift all 400 plus pounds of himself off the ground to get aholt of Oberyn after tripping him, which is probably all anyone would have been able to do, especially after poison had been coursing through his body for what seemed like a long time, on top of a direct hit to the heart.’

The post explained that the ‘realistic’ outcome would be for Oberyn to win over Gregor, followed by an angry Cersei (which is always entertaining).

However Oberyn’s death, they say, was ‘done for shock value and to shoehorn in a “vintage GOT moment”‘ – which it was, to be fair.

But another user, ‘debunked’ the theory, saying that the poison in Gregor’s system was intended to be slow-acting, and that any injuries that aren’t being stabbed in the heart or beheaded leave characters with a ‘grace period’ in which their still alive.,

In The Mountain’s case, the grace period left him enough time to trip Oberyn and crush his head like a grape.

Still, it’s fun to think about what could have been…

While the sun has set on Westeros as we know it, fans can now look forward to the prequel series.

The spin-off will chronicle ‘the world’s descent from the golden Age Of Heroes into its darkest hour’, a brief synopsis from HBO promised earlier this year.

The impressive cast includes Naomi Watts, John Simm and Miranda Richardson.

Game Of Thrones is available to watch on Sky and NOW TV.
