also part of the phrase "cloak and dagger" meaning a story usually dealing with spies, espionage and secret agents.

The last name "Snow" means a bastard from the North. Other regions have different names for bastards (Sand, Flowers, Waters, Stone…there are more.) I don't think they explicitly explain that in the show.
