Game Of Thrones will officially end on HBO before George RR Martin’s books (Picture: HBO)

George R.R. Martin, the author of the book series Game Of Thrones is based, has warned that the season eight finale will play out differently to the books.

Fans have been very, very patiently waiting for the release of Martin’s The Winds Of Winter, the next book in the A Song Of Ice And Fire series.

With the final season just around the corner, the HBO show is going to overtake the author’s books.

But it’s still worth buying The Winds Of Winter as it will have a totally different ending to season eight.

Martin told Rolling Stone: ‘I’ve been so slow with these books. The major points of the ending will be things I told them five or six years ago. But there may also be changes, and there’ll be a lot added.’

The author previously lamented the fact that he hadn’t finished his books sooner – and we have to say we agree.

George, 70, admitted he had ‘mixed feelings’ about Game Of Thrones ending, telling Entertainment Weekly: ‘It’s been an incredible ride. And almost all of it has been great.

‘Obviously, I wished I finished these books sooner so the show hadn’t gotten ahead of me. I never anticipated that.’

A Dance With Dragons, the latest GoT book to come out, ended with Jon Snow’s murder which happened back in season five on our screens.

The writer is just as keen to find out how his series officially ends on HBO as he hasn’t seen any of the scripts.

He admitted: ‘I haven’t read the [final-season] scripts and haven’t been able to visit the set because I’ve been working on Winds.

‘I know some of the things. But there’s a lot of minor-character [arcs] they’ll be coming up with on their own. And, of course, they passed me several years ago. There may be important discrepancies.’

Game Of Thrones returns 14 April on Sky Atlantic on HBO
