While the Game of Thrones’ duo claimed that there had never really been “much debate” about whether to include Lady Stoneheart, they both shared some very definitive reasons for her exclusion from the show, as they admitted that their insider knowledge of Martin’s pre-planned storylines played a role in their decision to cut the character from the series.
If you are a fan of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series who dissected every aspect of HBO’s popular Game of Thrones series, one of the biggest questions you have never had answered is “where was Lady Stoneheart?”
Lady Stoneheart is the resurrected Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), who took on the new form after she was brutally murdered during the now infamous Red Wedding ambush. It was a horrific moment that was seared into audiences’ brains forever more. In the sixth book, I still continue to write her.
David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the showrunners of Game of Thrones, have revealed why Lady Stoneheart wasn’t included in the show. It largely had to do with the fact they were already planning to kill (and subsequently resurrect) Jon Snow in the future, and by adding another resurrection into the mix would’ve cheapened the entire ordeal. “[Keeping her character] is the change I most wish I could make in the [show]”.
Of course, with another Ice and Fire book down the pipeline, we can only assume Lady Stoneheart will have an important arc to fulfill before Martin concludes his series. “Part of the reason we didn’t want to put it in had to do with things coming up in George’s books that we don’t want to spoil [by discussing them]”, Benioff explains, not making much sense when they would obviously later reveal who ends up on the Iron Throne.unless Martin has a different ending in mind! “Too many resurrections start to diminish the impact of characters dying”. We wanted to keep the ammunition for that moment ” Benioff always explains. Most readers presume this has something to do with Jaime Lannister or Brienne’s storyline, though nothing’s known for certain. The series was run by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss across all eight seasons.
All episodes of Game of Thrones are available to stream on HBO GO.
