As it turns out, Daenerys Targaryen’s children aren’t the only dragons in the village.

Game of Thrones fans have long joked that How To Train Your Dragon is basically an animated version of the HBO fantasy series.

But one particular scene during an episode of GoT’s season eight seemed to finally bring the two together and HTTYD’s director was stunned by the similarities.

During the TV show’s Battle of Winterfell in episode three, Jon Snow and Dany are forced to ride the dragon queen’s two surviving children – Rhaegel and Drogon – to try and take down her former dragon, Viserion, who was turned into a wight by the Night King.

And it seemed awfully similar to one particular scene in How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the animation’s final installment.

In the children’s adventure movie, Hiccup’s sidekick dragon Toothless is seen tussling in and out of the clouds in an almighty battle after clashing Grimmel, who isn’t exactly a fan of dragons.

Both scenes take place at night, feature two sets of dragons in the midst of a mid-air battle with an evil nemesis – not to mention HTTYD’s Hiccup and Astrid bare a striking resemblance to GoT’s Jon and Dany.

Just saying.

Reacting to the similarities, HTTYD’s director Dean DeBlois told Metro.co.uk: ‘I did, as soon as I saw it, I was sitting there with my husband and we looked at each other like, “Hold on a second”, but it’s a great compliment to us.’

The parallels don’t stop there either as Dean continued: ‘In the last season, there was a moment where Jon Snow extends his hand towards the dragon and the dragon [moves towards him].

‘I’m OK with Game of Thrones paying us homage because it’s the highest level of compliment to me.’

Yeah, we’d take it too – just forget GoT’s season eight even happened though.

But would our lovely Toothless be a match to take on the Night King?

Dean said: ‘Yes, they only have three eggs so they didn’t get to choose but if they had the diversity of dragon species that we have in the How To Train Your Dragon world, I think the White Walkers would be no problem.’

Not even close.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is available on blu-ray and DVD on 10 June from Universal Pictures (UK).
