Game of Thrones is known for its shock factor. After all, this is a show that unabashedly killed off a main character in Season 1 (RIP Ned Stark), slaughtered three favorites during a bloody wedding in Season 3 (RIP Robb, Talisa, and Catelyn), and threw in an aunt-nephew sex scene in Season 7 (worried for you, Jon and Dany). But even with such an intense and intricate plot, some of the most exciting parts of the GoT world are the things you don’t see onscreen. From the real-life cast and the show’s production to easter eggs from the George R. R. Martin series that started it all, here are 50 of our favorite mind-blowing Thrones tidbits.

Warning: potential spoilers ahead. But if you’re really the superfan you say you are, you probably already know them all anyway.

The Problem with Books

Charles Dance, who played Tywin Lannister, never read the books on which the series is based. He explained to Vulture in 2014: “We’re filming adaptations by David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss]. We’re not filming the books. And it’s counterproductive sometimes for actors to go back to the book, because they then tend to come on set and say, ‘Why aren’t we doing this scene? I’ve got this wonderful line here, and I want it in.’ That’s not what we’re about.”

We just had to use whatever head we had around.” They later apologized, and HBO issued a statement doing the same.
