Game Of Thrones spoilers ahead, so go away if you haven’t seen the finale yet.
It’s hard to remember when things were calm and easy in Westeros, especially after all the murder and the white walkers and the dragons and the Mad Queen. But once upon a time, the characters we’ve come to know over the last decade were relatively content.
Sure, it was only for the first ten minutes of the first episode, but it did happen.
When we first met the Stark family, they were a rag-tag bunch of kids all scampering around Winterfell under the watchful eye of their mother, Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), and father, Ned (Sean Bean). Now they’re certified adults, each with more than a few killings under their belt and hardly any direwolf pals.
Then roll in the Lannisters along with the Baratheons – of which only Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Gendry (Joe Dempsie) are left. Safe to say they’ve been through it too.
And what about Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)? Rather controversially she went from a meek sister, to a doting wife, to a Breaker of Chains to the Mad Queen. It’s no wonder she looks a little different.
Let’s take a look at how a decade of war effected the fresh-faced kids we met all the way back in 2011:
Daenerys Targaryen
Dany’s change in wardrobe has mostly been subject to the myriad weather she’s faced over the last decade. While she was Khaleesi it was all flowing robes and piles of bracelets and as we went through her Breaker of Chains stage, we saw her start to wear tougher leather ready for battle. In Winterfell she emerged in full leather dress, fur coat eleganza.
Her silvery Targaryen hair is her most distinguishing feature and over the years her plaits became more complicated and more tight – exactly like the mother of dragons herself.
Jon Snow (Kit Harington)
Cold weather is really bad for your skin, so no wonder Jon had such a baby face before he went North of The Wall.
This guy has seen some things – from White Walkers to the death of basically everyone he loves – but apart from a tad of ageing he still looks relatively the same in all his furs. That Stark breastplate is a pretty cool edition, though we’re not sure he’ll need it after the finale.
Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright)
Who knew little Bran would end up ruling over the Seven Kingdoms? Well, he did.
The boy who loved to climb the walls of Winterfell became the wise keeper of stories over the past decade, having become disabled after Jaime Lannister pushed him from a tower. Once a scamp running around with his direwolf, Summer, Bran ascended the ranks of to Lord of Winterfell before becoming the Three Eyed Raven.
Now he’s known as King Bran the Broken. Ned Stark would be proud.
Tyrion Lannister
We first met Tyrion in a Winterfell brothel, and while he was funnier and a bit nicer than his siblings, we still didn’t trust the Lannister.
He’s come on leaps and bounds since then having led an army in the Battle Of Blackwater, murdered his own father and lover in the same day, escaping King’s Landing and eventually being named the Hand of the monarch on more than one occasion.
Tyrion ditched his finery and jewels to don the more subtle yet more noble leathers of the Hand and garnered quite an impressive scar across his nose and face after getting a little too involved in the Battle of Blackwater.
The late-season beard deserves a mention too: Hands to (and prisoners of) the Queen of Dragons don’t have time to shave.
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams)
Armed with a needlepoint sword and a list of names, Arya travelled the width and breadth of Westeros out for blood.
It was clear that even the wiley, tiny Arya of season one was destined for great things when she began training with Syrio Forel (Miltos Yerolemou), though we never imagined she’d go on to become the show’s deadliest assassin and take out the Night King.
She’s experienced blindness, seen the horrors of war at King’s Landing and borne the worst of The Hound’s misery. She’s definitely grown up, but Arya Stark is no Lady.
Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)
One character who’s gone through a huge transformation is Sansa Stark (and not just because she was raped).
Starting out as a young girl doting on a future King Joffrey, the oldest Stark woman was misguided and enamoured by the bright lights of King’s Landing and royalty. Now, after escaping Bolton’s wrath and saving Jon in the Battle of the Bastards, Sansa is a certified leader in her own right.
In fact, she’s come so far that she’s decided to turn her back on the capital completely and take the North as an independent kingdom. What a Queen.
Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey)
To be fair to Cersei, she has seen all of her children die, has been stripped and shamed in the streets and literally everyone hates her. But that doesn’t excuse her descent into evil.
The former Queen’s most dramatic physical change was of course when she had her hair shorn as part of her punishment for adultery, a style Cersei decided to keep once she took back the throne – perhaps as a mark of insolence to those who wronged her.
Sure, we first new she was pretty nasty when she ordered Sansa’s direwolf to be slaughtered in place of Arya’s, but we never thought she’d get as bad as she did. RIP Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel).
Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
Jaime’s timeline of misdeeds and kindnesses gave us whiplash it fluctuated so much. It doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect on the knight himself, though as he only became more cunning, stronger and less annoying throughout the seasons.
In the first series, he famously looked like Prince Charming from Shrek but towards his death he was channeling more of an older, serious knight of the realm vibe.
We’ll never forgive him for abandoning Brienne though.
Game Of Thrones’ final episode airs on Sky Atlantic on 20 May and the whole show is available on NowTV.
