The only scene Emma D’Arcy dreaded
When asked how they prepared for the heavy emotional demands of the scene, D’Arcy was candid:
“How did you prepare for that scene and, you know, her exploring all those emotions in that moment? I mean, if I’m totally honest, it’s the only scene in the series that I sort of dreaded. And I think I probably was quite avoidant about it for a while.”

The weight of portraying a mother’s grief made the moment particularly challenging, even for an actor as experienced as D’Arcy.

Harry Collett’s thoughtful support
D’Arcy praised their young co-star Harry Collett (who plays Jace) for his intuitive and caring approach on the day of filming:
“Harry was totally beautiful on the day. I mean, I’m always struck, I think, by the extraordinary intuition of actors. We didn’t really speak in the morning and he gave me kind of a wide berth, but we hadn’t really sort of talked about it in advance. And then at lunchtime he found me very briefly and just said, you know, I didn’t know what would be best, but I just sort of thought I’d give you some space. Which is, you know, very moving.”
Honouring the emotional weight
D’Arcy explained that they often need space on intense shooting days to stay immersed in the moment. They described Harry to be an incredibly caring and deeply thinking person. They really felt supported with Harry by their side
This behind-the-scenes glimpse highlights the mutual respect and sensitivity between the cast, especially during pivotal and heartbreaking scenes.
A testament to cast camaraderie
Emma D’Arcy’s reflections show how House of the Dragon balances high-stakes drama with genuine care among its performers. Harry Collett’s simple but powerful gesture of giving space helped D’Arcy deliver one of Rhaenyra’s most devastating moments yet. As Season 3 explores the consequences of Jace’s death, this revelation adds even more emotional depth to the on-screen tragedy.
