HBO has now confirmed how many seasons we will be getting of the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
It first aired in 2022, with a second season coming a couple years later in June 2024.
After these two instalments, starring former Doctor Who Matt Smith and Wanderlust’s Emma D’Arcy, fans are gearing up for a third which is due to drop this summer.
In November, HBO formally announced during a presentation in New York there would be a fourth season airing in 2028, but there was no word on whether it would be the show’s last, as reported by Deadline.
Now, HBO Cheif Casey Bloys has confirmed to the publication that it will be the end for House of the Dragon.
Reaction online about the show continuing until season four hasn’t been wholly positive.
On Reddit, IdentityEnhancer claimed they were ‘still waiting for it to start’, and Kikz__Derp said it ‘should have been two [seasons].’
There was also some concern on how long it would take to actually get to the final chapter.
Jimjamjones123 wrote: ‘Hell ya can’t wait for 2032 for it to come out’, while mekese2000 added: ‘I hope we don’t have to wait six years for season four.’
Showrunner Ryan Condal, had previously said that the show would end with season four, but it hadn’t been confirmed by the TV network.
When asked to back up Condal’s comments, Bloys said: ‘That is the idea.
‘The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up.
‘So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens.’
When pressed on further details, Bloys said: ‘I don’t know where he’s landed on the episode count yet.’
Seasons one saw ten episodes, while season two saw eight – the third season is expected to follow suit with the latter.
The show has seen mixed reviews from fans, with MrBoMzIMDb on IMBd calling it: ‘a masterfully crafted tragedy that complements Game of Thrones very well’.
On the other hand, Rob1331 said his ‘main takeaway is… this should be and could’ve been a lot better.’
House of the Dragon follows the story of the Targaryens – a family of nobility who can control dragons – and is set 200 years before Game of Thrones begins.
It is based on the George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel, Fire and Blood, in which a civil war emerges after a family row.
The third season is expected to follow the book with the potential for some parts to stray, as has been the case with previous seasons.
Earlier this year, Martin revealed that he had an ‘abysmal’ relationship with showrunner Condal and that they’re no longer on speaking terms.
This comes after divisions on the creative direction of the show.
House of the Dragon seasons one and two are available to watch on NOW.
