Casey Bloys, the Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, just broke his silence on the tension between George R.R. Martin and House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal. In a candid interview, Bloys addressed the elephant in the room with the kind of diplomatic grace you’d expect from someone who’s spent years navigating creative egos at the highest level. And honestly, his response says a lot about how HBO views this situation—less as a catastrophic conflict and more as the natural friction that comes with any collaboration between strong-willed artists.

When asked about the reported feud between Martin and Condal, Bloys didn’t pretend everything was sunshine and roses. Instead, he leaned into the absurdity of the situation with humor. “Like any good American family, I would prefer that our dysfunction stays behind closed doors. But here we are,” Bloys said via Deadline, immediately acknowledging the elephant in the room. Then he pivoted to defending both men.

“What I would say is George introduced us to Ryan as the person that he thought would be the best to create House of the Dragon. And I will say Ryan has been an excellent showrunner and a really great partner and collaborator, so we embrace his vision and his creative choices, or we wouldn’t have done it.” The message is clear: Condal wasn’t forced upon Martin by HBO executives trying to wrest control. George himself saw Ryan as the right person for the job.

Why George taking a step back is actually a sign of stability

What’s particularly revealing is Bloys’s confirmation about Martin’s current role in the Game of Thrones universe. The HBO chief confirmed that George and HBO still have an overall deal in place, but he’s “taken a step back” from House of the Dragon specifically to focus on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

“Yes. Listen, I consider it great to have George as the architect of this world. I mean, think about what he has created, the world, the families, the battles, all of the history, it’s pretty extraordinary. George is a great partner for us to have. The idea that he is going to agree with every creator or showrunner that is either developing or producing, two artists are not always going to agree. So, some of this comes with the territory.”

Bloys makes a crucial point here: disagreement between artists isn’t a bug, it’s a feature. Martin stepping back from House of the Dragon isn’t capitulation or defeat—it’s a recognition that he can focus his energy on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms while still maintaining his creative partnership with HBO across the broader universe.
