Game of Thrones is ending. It’s sad, but it’s true. We know that the show recently finished filming, and while it doesn’t premiere till next year, we already have prequel ideas in development. Now we know that one of these is a show based on the Age of Heroes, and HBO recently ordered a pilot for this particular idea. As we wait in patience for any news on the other prequels, a new rumor has now broken out, saying that HBO might be making a prequel series about the Valyrian Empire. Read on!

A Game of Thrones history lesson: Valyria part I

This rumor comes from an administrator on the Game of Thrones Wiki, and it says that HBO is also working on a series calledEmpire of Ash, which will focus on the rise and fall of the Valyrian Empire. Apparently, this is the prequel idea helmed by Max Borenstein, one of the few writers working on Game of Thrones prequel ideas for HBO. The rumor also says that this one has the next best chances of being ordered for a pilot, after the already approved Age of Heroes series.

The rumor is quite detailed, and reveals several key things. First of all, it’s about the events leading to the Doom of Valyria, and will also cover the origins of the Targaryen family:

“It reveals the social, economic, and political crises which tore apart the empire from within.”The tipster apparently revealed that the people working on the shows have also: “relied extensively on fan-made wikis such as ours as a guide to the storyverse and worldbuilding”

Empire of Ash is apparently going to be at least five seasons long, so we can expect a lot of detail to be covered. There’s more details. The post says:

“According to its summary documents, this story addresses themes of a free republic in decline, the fallout of military and cultural imperialism, colonialism, immigration, and racial diversity.”

There’s also going to be hundreds of dragons. The show will have a lot of diversity, with actors of color and LGBT community as the casting instructions ask for the same. A part of the reason is because the show will have some focus on Sothoryos, which is like the ASOIAF equivalent of Africa. Speaking of characters, there are details on two main ones:

“One of the main characters, a POV core cast member, is a platinum blonde black female dragon-rider – one of her parents was a white Valyrian, the other a foreigner, leading some to deny that she’s a “real” Valyrian.”

The other one is described as below:

“One of the other main characters is a self-made former slave, a deceptively matronly-looking Asian woman in her 50s, that’s now not only one of the richest citizens but also a major political leader and government intrigue-player.”

Other characters mentioned are Aenar Targaryen and his daughter Daenys the Dreamer. (Let’s hope for a Daenys the Menance mini-series, too.)

The report also says there will be a lot of emphasis on world-building, and the people working on the show have already made extensive notes, including storylines, formed into what they’re calling “bibles.”

Finally, the show is apparently already close to development, and Miguel Sapochnik might direct the pilot. HBO is also apparently considering making more than just two prequels, and “starting to see this as their Star Wars scale franchise and are planning it out in advance.” Well, there’s a lot more detail in the original post, so go read it, over here.
