Video games have been a part of pop culture ever since they were introduced about half a century ago. Many of them have become so popular, they have been converted into films and TV shows, the most recent example being HBO’s TV adaptation, The Last of Us. It is one of the most ambitious shows about to be released on 15 January 2023 by the streaming giant, whose budget exceeds even that of the Emmy-winning juggernaut Game of Thrones.

Handling an enormous project such as the video game adaptation, the creators of the upcoming show are wary of being compared to other trendsetting shows such as Game of Thrones itself, and they recently assured the fans they won’t repeat the same mistake that Game of Thrones committed in the later seasons.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Neil Druckmann, the show’s co-creator, said that the series won’t stray from the source material. “We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” Druckmann said in the interview. “We won’t run into the same issue as ‘Game of Thrones’ since ‘Part II’ doesn’t end on a cliffhanger,” he added, referring to the game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II.

As for Last of Us Part III, Druckmann only said: “I think there’s more story to tell.”

“I don’t have any interest in a spinning-plates-go-on-forever show,” co-creator Craig Mazin told THR. “When it becomes a perpetual motion machine, it just can’t help but get kind of … stupid. Endings mean everything to me.”
