The barefoot training scene

Claffey explained that there was a scene early in season 1 where Egg goes off to train with the horse Thunder while Dunk is asleep. Interestingly, that sequence was shot on Claffey’s only day off. He recalled how tough the conditions were for Dexter:

“He had to do a lot of running in his bare feet through the grass and the muck and everything, and it was soaking wet and freezing.”

The production team had prepared fake prosthetic feet for Dexter to wear, but they looked terrible on camera.

“They looked so stupid. They looked horrible on camera.”

True dedication on set

When the fake feet didn’t work, Dexter had to remove them and run barefoot. Claffey shared that the ground was covered in sheep droppings, making it even more unpleasant. He also highlighted the support from the crew, particularly Sarah Adina Smith (director), who stepped up first:

“Sarah took off her own shoes and socks and did it first… and also did it with him on her back.”

This act of solidarity encouraged Dexter to push through. Claffey laughed while adding:

“There was a lot of sheep sh*t in there. So I had to be like, I can do sheep sh*t on my feet too.”
