While Game of Thrones may take place in the mythical world of Westeros, the show is actually just mostly filmed in Iceland, Northern Ireland and a few other European countries. That means that you can actually visit the place where your favorite scene from the show occurred. And obviously, you’ll want to post a picture of that place on Instagram.
Here are the 10 most Instagrammed locations from Game of Thrones:
1. Krka National Park, Croatia
Krka is already one of the most popular tourist destinations in Krka, but add in that several scenes from Game of Thrones, primarily ones involving Arya and the Hound traveling around the Riverlands, were filmed here, and obviously more people are going to show up.
2. Aït Benhaddou, Morocco
Aït Benhaddou is actually a registered UNESCO World Heritage site, and it also happens to be the city of Yunkai that Daenerys famously frees from the slavers early on in the show. It’s also been used in several other TV shows and movies.
3. Dark Hedges, Northern Ireland
Dark Hedges is famously used as the “Kingsroad” on the TV show. It’s also just one of the coolest looking places ever.
4. Carrick-A-Rede, Northern Ireland
This rope bridge is the famous scene where Euron Greyjoy (spoiler alert if you haven’t watched the TV show) pushes Balon Greyjoy to his death. Definitely looks like a place where that could happen.
5. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Spain
This island means “castle rock” in Basque, so it makes sense that the show’s most famous castle on top of a bunch of rock a.k.a. Dragonstone would be filmed here.
6. Bardenas Reales, Spain
The Bardenas Reales is just a desert region in the south of Spain that is used on the show when Daenerys and the Dothraki are making their long journey.
7. Vatnajökull, Iceland
Good luck pronouncing this location, but Vatnajökull is Iceland’s largest glacier. It’s also the backdrop for The Wall. So maybe the glacier is also keeping dangerous White Walkers away from the rest of Iceland.
8. Pingvellir National Park, Iceland
If you go to Iceland, there’s actually a Game of Thrones tour you can take that will show you some of the shooting locations the used by the show near Reykjavik, the country’s capital, including this national park. As someone who has taken the tour, I highly recommend it.
9. Itálica, Spain
Itálica was an ancient Roman city in Spain near modern day Seville. You may recognize it form the famous scene in season seven when basically every character on the show met in the Dragonpit.
10. Doune Castle, Scotland
The courtyard of Doune Castle was the original setting for Winterfell, the home of the Starks on the show. The big feast scene from the first episode was also shot here.
