House of the Dragon Season 3 may be preparing for its boldest gamble yet, if the newest rumor proves true. Across its 18 episodes so far, the Game of Thrones prequel has not hesitated to diverge from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. Even Martin himself, in a since-deleted blog post after Season 2, voiced displeasure over some of the changes. Now, fresh whispers suggest another deviation that could spark both intrigue and outrage.
According to @housethedragons on X, Daeron Targaryen, the son of Alicent Hightower and Viserys Targaryen, set to debut in Season 3, may be captured or handed over to Daemon Targaryen. But wait: two actors have reportedly been cast, with Charlie Gordon portraying a “fake” Daeron, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays the real heir.

Set photos already hinted at Daeron’s connection with Daemon, fueling theories of his capture. This alleged twist takes it further, suggesting a ruse in which a false prince is offered up. The logic behind it holds some weight: Daeron has grown up far from King’s Landing, meaning neither Daemon nor Rhaenyra would likely recognize him as an adult.
A boy of the right age, with Valyrian features and a princely manner, could convincingly pass as the missing son. Such sleight of hand fits comfortably within Martin’s wider saga, where Jeyne Poole was once passed off as Arya Stark and Young Griff’s true identity continues to spark debate. While those arcs never reached Game of Thrones, the prequel could be drawing on that same tradition of deception.

But the biggest snag lies in Daeron’s dragon, Tessarion. A dragon cannot be deceived by a pretender, so the show would need to either keep her sidelined by the Greens or eliminate her through conflict with the Blacks. Without resolving Tessarion’s role, the rumored twist risks collapsing under its own weight. It also raises a larger question: why alter Daeron’s path at all?
In Fire & Blood, his bravery earns him the epithet “The Daring”, with a clear arc worth translating to screen. Reworking it to amplify Daemon’s presence may feel unnecessary, risking backlash from loyal readers. Still, nothing is confirmed. With Season 3 currently filming and slated for release in summer 2026 on HBO and Max, fans will have to wait and see if this supposed deception truly becomes part of Targaryen history.
