As House of the Dragon Season 3 prepares to premiere, showrunner Ryan Condal has revealed how the series is deliberately breaking from the narrative rhythm established by Game of Thrones. Speaking to Gold Derby, Condal explained that while audiences grew accustomed to Thrones seasons starting slow and building toward explosive climaxes, Season 3 of House of the Dragon takes a different approach. The season opens with the Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval conflict, and Condal described the creative choice as throwing a “haymaker right away.”

Breaking the Thrones formula
Condal acknowledged that Game of Thrones often relied on a slow‑burn structure, with tension mounting until a mid‑season or finale battle. House of the Dragon Season 3, however, begins at full speed. “People have become very accustomed to Game of Thrones seasons having a slow build and then there’s an explosion, maybe midway through, and then certainly near the end. The fun of this one was, ‘Let’s hit everybody. The bell rings in the boxing ring and they come out and we throw our haymaker right away,’” Condal said.
The Battle of the Gullet as centerpiece
By opening with the Battle of the Gullet, the show signals that Season 3 will not wait to deliver its spectacle. Condal has previously compared the clash to The Lord of the Rings, underscoring its scale and importance. The decision to begin with such a massive set piece reflects the urgency of the Dance of the Dragons storyline, where war is no longer looming but fully underway. This shift in pacing is designed to immerse viewers immediately in the chaos of Westeros’ civil war.
