Showrunner Ryan Condal has revealed that the writers deliberately worked to give Aemond Targaryen more depth and avoid turning him into a one-dimensional “anime villain.”
In a new interview with Los Angeles Times, Condal acknowledged the risk of the character becoming too cartoonish due to his commanding appearance and ruthless actions:
“There was a danger of the character becoming an anime villain. He looks a certain way. He has this eye patch. He rides this Godzilla-sized dragon. And he’s done some pretty reprehensible things.”

Rather than leaning into a surface-level villain archetype, the writers chose to explore Aemond’s trauma and vulnerability:

“The idea was to go to a different place and excavate that trauma and vulnerability.”
Condal explained that Aemond arrives at Harrenhal feeling isolated and alone, having potentially made an enemy of his own family. His unexpected connection with Alys Rivers becomes one of the most surprising and emotional storylines of the season:
“He’s feeling isolated and alone… And then this woman saves him. He feels this sudden magnetic draw to her. In the episodes that follow, we will further excavate that relationship. It’s one of the most surprising and engaging and emotional stories we have this season.”
This approach allows the audience to see beyond Aemond’s intimidating exterior. While he remains dangerous and capable of brutal acts, the show is working to humanize him by exploring the neglected, bullied boy from Season 1 who grew into a man desperate to prove his worth.
Condal’s comments confirm that Season 3 is focused on adding layers to Aemond rather than letting him become a straightforward antagonist.
