After the emotional Trial of Seven in the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 finale, Ser Duncan the Tall finds himself at an important turning point. He is deeply shaken by Baelor Targaryen’s death and disappointed by the nobles he once admired. Because of this, Dunk first refuses Prince Maekar’s offer to stay at Summerhall and train young Aegon (Egg) as his squire.

But one honest conversation changes his mind and it comes from someone unexpected: Prince Daeron Targaryen, Egg’s older brother, also known as Daeron the Drunken.

Quick read:

• Ira Parker reveals Daeron to be the reason Dunk’s decision changes

• Daeron’s care for his little brother is reflected from his conversation with Dunk

• Dunk agrees to take Egg as his squire at the end of episode 6

Why Daeron’s words affect Dunk’s decision

Daeron is a troubled man haunted by his own failures and prophetic visions. He indirectly comes to meet Dunk and subtly lays clues for him to take Egg away. He explains what Egg’s life will become if he stays at court without Dunk’s guidance. As showrunner Ira Parker explains in the Inside the Episode segment saying,

“When Daeron quite bluntly puts into context what Egg’s life will be like without Dunk, that’s the thing that finally gets him to go back to Maekar with his own gambit.”

Here, Daeron isn’t being cruel. His warning comes from experience. He has seen his family fall apart; himself lost in alcohol and regret, and Aerion becoming violent and cruel because of the royal environment. Daeron understands that growing up only around power and privilege can damage a person. He believes Egg still has a chance to turn out different, but only if someone like Dunk guides him.

This truth hits Dunk hard. Raised by the kind but humble Ser Arlan of Pennytree, Dunk realizes what is at stake. Without help, Egg could grow up spoiled and disconnected from real people. So Dunk returns to Maekar with a bold counter-offer to let Egg travel with him instead of staying at Summerhall.

As Parker explains, Dunk believes princes raised only in castles often turn out badly. His words are blunt, but they come from what he has observed about Maekar’s other sons and the corrupting nature of court life. Maekar refuses at first because he cannot imagine his royal son living like a common traveler with a hedge knight. Still, the idea has been planted.

In the end, Egg makes his own choice. He secretly leaves to join Dunk anyway without his father’s permission. The final moment shown in the post-credit scene, where Maekar realizes his son is gone, shows the consequences that will follow. But it all starts with Daeron’s conversation.

Without meaning to, Daeron saves his younger brother’s future. By forcing Dunk to think about what might happen to Egg otherwise, he ensures Egg grows up learning kindness and responsibility from the real world, not just royal politics. That path eventually leads Egg to become Aegon V: a king who would later dream of dragons and smallfolk justice.
