In the season 1 finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, young Aegon Targaryen or Egg, makes a quiet but shocking choice when he sneaks away from his family to rejoin Ser Duncan the Tall on the road. However, what appears as a boy’s impulsive adventure is, in the eyes of the showrunners and cast, a profound rejection of the Targaryen legacy his father, Prince Maekar, desperately wants to impose.

Maekar sees Egg as his final opportunity to redeem his family’s name. Having watched his eldest sons descend into ruin; one lost to drink and despair, the other warped into cruelty, he clings to the hope that Egg can be shaped into the ideal Targaryen prince.

Quick read:

• Egg rejoins Dunk as his squire without his father’s permission

• Maekar desperately tries to hold on to Egg as his last hope for a noble son

• Egg’s decision is set to shape his future differently than his brothers

Why director Sarah Adina Smith calls Egg’s choice a ‘moment of relief’

In episode 6’s Inside the Episode featurette, actor Sam Spruell (Maekar) explains,

“Aegon is his last chance to create a legacy that is fit for the throne and him leaving is a kind of rejection of that.”

Egg’s departure isn’t mere rebellion but it’s a deliberate way of turning away from Summerhall, where Targaryen sons are trained in isolation, privilege, and the grandeur of power.

Maekar’s vision of legacy is rooted in control. He wants to keep Egg under royal supervision, finish his training properly, and mold him worthy of the Iron Throne. But Egg, having tasted life on the road with Dunk consisting of honest hardship, smallfolk struggles, and genuine trust, chooses something different. He rejects the corruption that has claimed his brothers and the rigid hierarchy that would likely claim him too.

As one of the show’s directors Sarah Adina Smith notes:

“Had it not been for meeting Dunk, he probably would have gone on to be a corrupted Targaryen. So it’s such a moment of relief when he goes with Dunk.”

This “moment of relief” describes both the tragedy and triumph of the scene. Without Dunk’s influence, Egg might have followed the same path as Daeron or Aerion. Instead, Dunk’s groundedness saves him, transforming a little prince into a happy squire with someone he can trust.

Egg’s choice foreshadows the king he will become. Aegon V, the unconventional ruler grows to become one who is loved by the smallfolk and possesses humility for everyone. Egg becomes the boy who could have become another corrupted prince instead becomes the king who tries to break the cycle. In choosing Dunk, Egg chooses the world beyond dragons and fire. And in that quiet act of running away, he ensures the Targaryen legacy evolves through him.
