How Dexter Sol Ansell turned his bald look into a brand is not a gimmick or a throwaway anecdote; it is a snapshot of intent meeting opportunity. As HBO readies A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for its six-episode debut, the conversation around the series is already drifting toward the young actor playing Egg and the choices that shaped his casting.
With production lining up, Owen Harris stepping in to set the visual language, and Sol Ansell publicly documenting his physical transformation, the prequel has found an early human hook. The show adapts George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, set long before Game of Thrones yet close enough to echo its politics. Sol Ansell, fresh off The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, now carries the task of embodying a boy who is more than he seems.
Quick Read:
- Dexter Sol Ansell is fully committed to playing Egg, even agreeing to shave his head.
- He turned his shaved look into a real-life school hustle, charging classmates for food to touch his head.
- Ansell plays Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, a hidden prince traveling incognito in Westeros.
Dexter Sol Ansell’s bald commitment and the Egg origin story

During a promotional appearance, Sol Ansell revealed just how literal his commitment to Egg became. Recalling the audition process, he explained:
Well, that was that was really really crazy because um well the first actually auditions they said, ‘Are you okay shaving your hair?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, 100%. I’m fully committed.’… But uh when I shaved my hair, it was amazing. And I made this kind of business at school because everyone wanted to touch my hair. And I had this kind of like youth club at my school where you can like get all food and all stuff. So I said, ‘If you touch my hair, you have to buy me food.’ I made like a whole business for.
That story fits neatly into Egg’s own disguise in Westeros. Egg shaves his head to move unnoticed, hiding the truth that he is Aegon Targaryen, a future king traveling with Ser Duncan the Tall. Sol Ansell even shared a barber shop video on Instagram, smiling through the process, which earned approval from the official Game of Thrones account. Peter Claffey responded warmly with, “There’s a squire I can trust my life with ❤️,” to which Sol Ansell replied, “always ⭐️”.
George R. R. Martin later praised the casting on “Not a Blog”, calling Sol Ansell eager and ready for the role.
Who is Dexter Sol Ansell?

Dexter Sol Ansell is not a one-project wonder quietly drifting into Westeros. He is a young performer who has already shown an ability to shoulder complex characters without leaning on noise or novelty. Before stepping into the boots of Egg, Sol Ansell appeared as young Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a role that demanded restraint, menace, and emotional control far beyond his years. That performance placed him on Hollywood’s radar as a child actor who could handle weight, not just screen time.
Born and raised in the UK, Sol Ansell has steadily built his craft through film and television, choosing roles that test discipline rather than chase attention. His casting as Egg reflects that trajectory. Egg is observant, sharp, loyal, and quietly dangerous in potential, traits that require internal acting rather than theatrics.
