One of the directors of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Owen Harris, has given fans a look at what to expect from the upcoming season 2. He promises a visually fresh and emotionally deeper story for the protagonists, Dunk and Egg.

In an interview with Gold Derby, Harris opened up about the challenges and excitement of continuing the series based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg novellas. While season 1 adapted “The Hedge Knight,” season 2 will bring “The Sworn Sword” to life.

Harris highlighted the heart of the new season:

“The development of their adventure, their story, this awkward couple, and how they learn from each other, and what they learn about themselves. I think that’s going to be fun.”

He described Dunk and Egg as an “awkward couple,” whose brotherly bond continues to grow through shared trials. Their evolving relationship, full of humour, conflict, and mutual growth, remains the emotional core of the series.

A visually new experience

One of the biggest promises for season 2 is a distinct visual identity:

“It’s a different world and looks visually new. You can’t go back and try and repeat what you’ve done, and what we did had its own personality based on where it was set. This is going to be different.”

Season 1 was largely set around the tournament at Ashford Meadow. Season 2 shifts the story into the Reach, bringing new landscapes, conflicts over water rights, political intrigue, and fresh settings that will give the series a brand-new feel while staying true to the spirit of the books.

Harris acknowledged the pressure of following a well-received first season but expressed confidence in the new direction. He tells fans,

“But hopefully, you still enjoy going on the ride with them.”

This approach suggests the creative team is focused on evolving the story rather than copying season 1’s formula.
