Jack Gleeson, best known for portraying the sadistic King Joffrey Baratheon in HBO’s Game of Thrones, has finally addressed the long-standing rumors surrounding his break from screen acting. Contrary to popular belief, Gleeson didn’t step away due to fan backlash or public confusion between actor and character. Instead, his decision was rooted in personal creative choices—and a love for theater.

Quick read:

  • Jack Gleeson didn’t quit acting due to Joffrey backlash—he faced no abuse.
  • He chose theater with friends in Dublin, simply following his interests.
  • Gleeson later missed screen work and returned on his own terms.

Gleeson’s Shift to Theater Was Intentional, Not Reactionary

Despite Joffrey being one of television’s most hated characters, Gleeson never let the public’s intense reactions derail his passion for acting. In a recent interview with The Hook, he clarified: “Well, I can say thankfully it wasn’t because I received any sort of abuse from anybody. Thankfully, I know that can happen.

People confuse the character with the actor. After Game of Thrones or even during, I was continuing to act, but it was more just with a theater company I set up with some friends in Dublin. And I don’t know, I was just more into that at the time. But then, I started to miss screen acting and got back into it. So I don’t know, it’s just where I was at the time.”

His time with Dublin’s Collapsing Horse Theatre Company allowed him to explore storytelling on his own terms, away from the spotlight of global fame.

Return to Screen Marks a New Chapter

Gleeson’s recent roles—including appearances in Sex Education and House of Guinness—signal a quiet but confident return to screen acting. His journey reflects a thoughtful recalibration rather than retreat. By choosing theater over Hollywood, Gleeson preserved his creative integrity and now re-emerges with renewed purpose.

For fans who mistook silence for retreat, Gleeson’s comeback is a reminder: sometimes, stepping back is the most powerful way to move forward.
