Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa’s enthusiasm for playing DC Comics’ infamous bounty hunter Lobo has been no secret. And apparently, the moment James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC Studios, Momoa made his intent crystal clear—with a direct text to Gunn that simply read, “F—ing Lobo.” Gunn’s reply? He had been saying for years that Momoa should embody the cigar-chomping, intergalactic antihero.

Quick read:

  • Momoa pushed for Lobo: He texted Gunn “F—ing Lobo” when Gunn took over DC Studios, eager for the role.
  • Perfect casting: Fans have long linked Momoa to the character, and he’s been a Lobo fan for years.
  • Official debut: Momoa will play Lobo in Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, releasing June 26, 2026.

A Text That Set the Stage

Gunn recently shared this text exchange (via Variety), reminiscing about the moment Momoa reached out when DC’s leadership shift was announced in fall 2022. According to Gunn, that message kicked off discussions about Momoa officially joining DCU as Lobo. Given Momoa’s rugged charm and larger-than-life presence, fans had speculated for years that he would be the perfect choice to bring the fan-favorite character to the big screen. Back then, he replied, “Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years. No lie.”

In another post on social media, Gunn said, “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo. I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life and can’t wait to share that with all of you.”

The movie, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, is set to be the second film in DC’s rebooted cinematic universe following Gunn’s Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film promises high-stakes action, with Momoa’s Lobo expected to add a dose of brutality and humor to the mix. Fans won’t have to wait too long—Supergirl is slated to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
